Valentine’s Day is becoming one of the most popular holidays around the globe, especially in the United States. Families and friends come together to celebrate love and joy as mid-February approaches. Couples around the world plan a special day to spend with each other, while shops and restaurants adorn their interiors with red and pink to welcome them. During this time, Valentine’s day offers are in full swing as people are already hustling to buy chocolates, flowers, and gifts for their significant others.
Valentine’s day does have a somber history, though very few people know about it. There are several legends regarding its origin but the most widely known one is about a Roman priest, Saint Valentine. During the third century, Roman Emperor Claudius II had passed a law banning marriage; he believed that men who were single served better in the army than men who were married and had families.
Valentine was strongly against this and secretly defied the King, helping young couples wed in private. Claudius soon found out about it and sentenced him to death on the 14th of February, the day we commemorate in his name. During his time in prison before his execution, Valentine fell in love with his prison guard’s daughter. The day before his sentence, he sent one last letter to her, signed “From your Valentine”, a term still used by lovers all over the world to express their love and affection.
